Ingredients

  • 1 each egg
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese (such as Emmental, Comté, or Parmesan)
  • 1/4 cup black sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds (for fingernails)
  • 1 each egg yolk
  • 1 tsp food coloring (optional)

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling Pin
  • Knife or pizza cutter
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the egg, olive oil, milk, salt, Italian seasoning, and baking powder. Whisk until well blended. Gradually add the all-purpose flour and cornstarch, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Fold in the grated cheese until evenly distributed throughout the dough. The cheese adds a delightful flavor and richness to your grissini.
  3. Lightly flour your work surface and turn out the dough. Divide it into small pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin strip resembling a finger, about 6-8 inches in length.
  4. Take a slice of almond and press it onto one end of each dough strip to create the appearance of a fingernail. This adds to the spooky look of your Witch Finger Grissini!
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place your shaped grissini on the baking sheet, making sure to leave some space between them.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolk with a splash of water and, if desired, a few drops of food coloring. Brush this mixture over each grissini for a beautiful golden finish once baked.
  7. Sprinkle black sesame seeds over the top of each grissini to add an extra touch and enhance the spooky appearance.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-baking.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Consider placing a paper towel inside the container to maintain crispiness.
  • You can make the dough and shape the grissini ahead of time and store them in the fridge until baking.
