Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon white sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 1 sushi-grade tuna steak/fillet 1/2-inch thick
  • 1 tablespoon green onions sliced
  • Lime wedges for garnish

Equipment

  • Heavy-bottomed skillet
  • Measuring spoons
  • Sharp knife
  • Spatula
  • Serving plate

Method

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, honey, and black pepper.
  2. Place the sushi-grade tuna steak in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over it. Let it marinate for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally.
  3. Heat your heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Once the skillet is hot, remove the tuna from the marinade and place it in the skillet. Sear for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  5. Sprinkle the white sesame seeds over the steak and allow them to toast slightly.
  6. Remove the tuna from the skillet and let it rest for a couple of minutes. Slice it against the grain into thick strips.
  7. Arrange the sliced tuna on a serving plate, drizzle with any reserved marinade, and sprinkle with sliced green onions. Serve with lime wedges.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add sriracha to the marinade.
  • Use tamari for a gluten-free version of soy sauce.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
