Ingredients

For the Cookies:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • ¾ cup unflavored vegetable shortening at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 1 large egg yolk at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk chocolate M&Ms plus more for topping

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Electric mixer
  • Baking Sheets
  • Parchment paper
  • Cookie Scoop

Method

Method:
  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Step 2: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, fine sea salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Set aside.
  3. Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the unsalted butter and vegetable shortening until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Add the granulated sugar to the creamed mixture and beat until well combined. Then, add the large egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  5. Step 5: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix!
  6. Step 6: Gently fold in the milk chocolate M&Ms, reserving a handful for topping the cookies.
  7. Step 7: Using a cookie scoop, portion out the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Press a few extra M&Ms into the top of each cookie.
  8. Step 8: Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers may look a bit underbaked, but they will continue to cook as they cool.
  9. Step 9: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a thicker cookie, add an additional 1-2 tablespoons of flour to the dough.
  • To store, place cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • For a festive touch, use red and green M&Ms during the holidays.
