Ingredients

  • 1 pound finely shredded pepper jack cheese
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese softened
  • 1 4-ounce can diced green chiles
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 14-ounce package wonton wrappers
  • 4 cups vegetable oil for deep frying

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Fork or spatula
  • Deep frying pan or pot
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Cookie sheet or plate

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the finely shredded pepper jack cheese, softened cream cheese, diced green chiles, garlic powder, and chili powder. Use a fork or spatula to mix everything together until well combined.
  2. Lay out a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Place about a teaspoon of the cheese filling in the center of the wrapper. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little water using your finger. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges firmly to seal.
  3. In a deep frying pan or pot, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Test if the oil is ready by dropping in a small piece of wonton wrapper.
  4. Carefully add a few wontons to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Once all the wontons are fried, serve them warm with your favorite dipping sauces. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a milder flavor, substitute pepper jack cheese with cheddar or Monterey Jack.
  • Store leftover wontons in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To freeze uncooked wontons, place them on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag.
