Method:
- Step 1: Cook the Pasta - In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.
- Step 2: Brown the Meat - In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground turkey and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
- Step 3: Sauté the Onions - Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the meat and sauté until translucent, approximately 3-4 minutes.
- Step 4: Add Tomatoes & Spices - Stir in the tomato sauce, fire roasted diced tomatoes, Italian-style diced tomatoes, and tomato paste. Mix well to combine. Then, add the dried Italian herb seasoning, garlic powder, salt, oregano, thyme, basil, and sugar. Stir everything together.
- Step 5: Simmer - Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes. If the sauce thickens too much, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
- Step 6: Combine & Serve - Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to coat. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil or grated cheese if desired.
Notes
- Always cook pasta al dente to avoid mushiness when mixed with the sauce.
- Letting the sauce simmer helps to meld flavors together; don’t rush this step.
- If your sauce tastes too acidic, add a pinch more sugar to balance it out.
