Ingredients

For the Spaghetti:
  • 16 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion, chopped
For the Sauce:
  • 2 cans tomato sauce (15 ounces each)
  • 1 can fire roasted diced tomatoes (14.5 ounces)
  • 1 can Italian-style diced tomatoes (14.5 ounces)
  • 1 can tomato paste (6 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herb seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar to balance acidity

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Skillet or saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Colander
  • Measuring spoons
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

Method:
  1. Step 1: Cook the Pasta - In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.
  2. Step 2: Brown the Meat - In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground turkey and Italian sausage. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Step 3: Sauté the Onions - Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the meat and sauté until translucent, approximately 3-4 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Add Tomatoes & Spices - Stir in the tomato sauce, fire roasted diced tomatoes, Italian-style diced tomatoes, and tomato paste. Mix well to combine. Then, add the dried Italian herb seasoning, garlic powder, salt, oregano, thyme, basil, and sugar. Stir everything together.
  5. Step 5: Simmer - Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes. If the sauce thickens too much, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
  6. Step 6: Combine & Serve - Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to coat. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil or grated cheese if desired.

Notes

  • Always cook pasta al dente to avoid mushiness when mixed with the sauce.
  • Letting the sauce simmer helps to meld flavors together; don’t rush this step.
  • If your sauce tastes too acidic, add a pinch more sugar to balance it out.
