Ingredients

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 cup hazelnuts fresh, raw

Equipment

  • Medium-Sized Pot
  • Large Bowl
  • Slotted spoon
  • Colander
  • Kitchen towel

Method

  1. Begin by bringing 2 cups of water to a rolling boil in a medium-sized pot. Once boiling, carefully add 3 tablespoons of baking soda. Be cautious, as this may cause the water to bubble up.
  2. Once the baking soda has dissolved and the bubbling has subsided, add 1 cup of hazelnuts to the pot. Stir gently to ensure all the nuts are submerged in the solution.
  3. Allow the hazelnuts to boil in the baking soda water for about 3-5 minutes. This will help loosen the skins significantly.
  4. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the hazelnuts from the boiling water and transfer them into a colander. Make sure to drain them well to get rid of any excess water.
  5. While the hazelnuts are still warm, use your fingers to gently rub the skins off. You’ll find that they come off easily, leaving you with beautifully peeled nuts.
  6. Once peeled, spread the hazelnuts out on a clean kitchen towel to dry completely. This will help keep them fresh and ready for your next culinary adventure.

Notes

  • Store peeled hazelnuts in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
  • For long-term storage, consider refrigerating or freezing them.
  • To reheat, toast in a dry skillet over medium heat until warm and fragrant.
