Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons onion coarsely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons cornichons coarsely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon capers drained
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornichon juice
  • to taste Black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 tablespoon flat-leaf parsley chopped

Equipment

  • Chopping Board
  • Knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Begin by gathering all your ingredients. Chop the onion and cornichons coarsely, and drain the capers. Having everything prepped will make the mixing process seamless.
  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, add 1 cup of mayonnaise. This will be the creamy foundation of your tartar sauce.
  3. To the mayonnaise, add 3 tablespoons of coarsely chopped cornichons, 3 tablespoons of coarsely chopped onion, and 1 tablespoon of drained capers.
  4. Next, pour in 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon of distilled white vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce. Don’t forget the 1 teaspoon of cornichon juice for that extra burst of flavor.
  5. Using a whisk or spatula, mix all the ingredients until well combined. Make sure the onion, cornichons, and capers are evenly distributed throughout the mayonnaise.
  6. Season with freshly ground black pepper to taste. You can also adjust the other ingredients based on your preference—add more lemon juice for brightness or more cornichons for tang.
  7. Finally, stir in 1 tablespoon of chopped flat-leaf parsley for a fresh touch. This not only adds flavor but also makes your Homemade Tartar Sauce visually appealing.
  8. For the best flavor, cover and refrigerate your tartar sauce for at least 30 minutes. This allows all the flavors to meld together beautifully.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce.
  • Incorporate finely diced dill pickles instead of cornichons for a different flavor profile.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to one week in the refrigerator.
