Stepwise Method: Homemade Haight Ashbury Sandwich
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Russian Dressing
In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of mayonnaise, 1/4 cup of ketchup, 1 tablespoon of grated horseradish, 2 teaspoons of finely minced onion, and hot sauce if desired. Mix until smooth and set aside.
  2. Step 2: Toast the Bread (Optional)
If you prefer a toasted sandwich, lightly toast the slices of raisin pumpernickel bread until golden brown.
  3. Step 3: Assemble the Sandwich
Spread a generous amount of the homemade Russian dressing on one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Step 4: Layer the Ingredients
On one slice, layer the smoked peppered turkey, followed by the muenster cheese, tomato slices, avocado slices, and a handful of alfalfa sprouts.
  5. Step 5: Top It Off
Place the other slice of bread on top, dressing side down, and press gently to secure the layers.
  6. Step 6: Slice and Serve
Cut the sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately, or wrap it up for a delicious on-the-go meal.

Notes

  • Feel free to substitute the smoked turkey with your choice of deli meat or even a plant-based alternative.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese such as cheddar or gouda for a different flavor profile.
  • For added texture, consider including sliced cucumbers or pickles.
