Ingredients

For the Chicken:
  • 1.5 lbs chicken drumsticks
  • 1 piece ginger, peeled and chopped 2-inch/5cm
  • 5 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
  • 1.5 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 0.5 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3 dashes white pepper
  • 1 pinch Chinese five-spice powder optional
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking dish
  • Measuring spoons
  • Sharp knife and cutting board
  • Oven

Method

Cooking Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Marinade - In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped ginger, garlic, soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, sesame oil, white pepper, Chinese five-spice powder (if using), and a pinch of salt. Whisk everything together until well blended. The aroma will be incredible!
  2. Step 2: Marinate the Chicken - Add the chicken drumsticks to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the chicken and marinade to a resealable plastic bag. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or ideally, overnight. This step is crucial for allowing the flavors to penetrate the chicken.
  3. Step 3: Preheat and Prepare - Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). While the oven is heating up, take the marinated chicken out of the fridge and arrange it in a baking dish. Pour any leftover marinade over the chicken for extra flavor.
  4. Step 4: Bake the Chicken - Bake the chicken in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the drumsticks are cooked through and golden brown. You can use a meat thermometer to check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  5. Step 5: Serve and Enjoy - Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute. Serve it with steamed rice or your favorite side dishes, and enjoy the explosion of flavors in every bite!

Notes

  • For maximum flavor, marinate the chicken overnight.
  • Use a meat thermometer to avoid overcooking the chicken.
  • Let the chicken rest after baking for juicier meat.
