Ingredients

  • 14 ounces calamari rings and tentacles Fresh or frozen, cleaned thoroughly
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for richness and color
  • 1 lemon juiced adds brightness
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs for crispy texture
  • 1 teaspoon salt for flavor enhancement
  • 1 teaspoon oregano adds herbal note
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper for subtle kick

Equipment

  • Large Bowl
  • Shallow dish
  • Frying Pan or Deep Fryer
  • Paper towels
  • Tongs or slotted spoon

Method

  1. Begin by rinsing the calamari under cold water. Pat them dry with paper towels to ensure they are not watery.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the calamari, olive oil, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat all the pieces evenly. Allow to marinate for about 15-20 minutes.
  3. In a shallow dish, mix together the panko breadcrumbs, salt, oregano, and black pepper. Dredge each piece of marinated calamari in the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. In a frying pan or deep fryer, heat enough oil to submerge the calamari to about 350°F (175°C).
  5. Carefully add the coated calamari to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Once cooked, remove the calamari from the oil and let them drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with lemon wedges and your favorite dipping sauce!

Notes

  • For a spicy twist, add cayenne pepper to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Incorporate fresh herbs like parsley into the breadcrumbs for added freshness.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
